Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Patrick Frank, Co-Founder of Float Factory, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Float Factory - The customers of our company are individuals and families who are looking for new ways to have fun in the water. Our products are made to make you feel like a kid again. Whether young adults, a parent, or a kid, our customers are here to have a literal blast. The actual demographic data behind our customers is made up of the majority of families and purchasers between the ages of 35-55. Depending on the platform, it is split between women and men, and we sell the majority of our products in the largest states: CA, NY, FL, and TX. We have outliers like PA & CT and a lot of the east coast, which surprised us. Our customers are strongly represented by a patriotic forward mentality and have loyalty to brands like ford, chevy, and other similar brands.

Tell us about yourself

I am motivated every day by putting a smile on someone else's face. Building this company, no matter how hard it gets, reminds me there is fun that can be found everywhere. That fun is translated into our work, our products, and our customers. I am motivated every day to continue to bring awesome, wild, and out-of-the-box products that get people excited!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment though I don't think I have done nearly as much as others yet, has been bringing this company from an idea to a fun project, to a side hustle, to a full-blown company in a very short amount of time. In two years, we were able to do over $1M in sales of a single SKU, which we thought was pretty cool, considering we had no idea what we were doing at first.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The sacrifices you make as a business owner are no joke. The sleepless nights a standard 14hr work day 6-7 days a week, the lack of social life, and the requirement to stay positive amongst it all is a constant challenges that individuals have to be well aware of when preparing to start their own company. It takes a lot of grit, courage, and determination to get through it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Understand what you are getting into.
  2. Commit yourself. Don't just say you are going to do something. Think and then act fast. Make mistakes and learn and make new mistakes and then learn again. Be ready for it.
  3. Do not get lost in ideation paralysis. Stop thinking too much about your next move. Just act and learn. If you end up thinking for too long, you will persuade yourself out of anything that makes your feel uncomfortable. News flash - The entire process is uncomfortable. Get used to it.
